Nakashima of Japan

My friend and I took a drive to Green Bay to check out Nakashima of Japan for Restaurant Week.  We both chose to go with their hibachi dinner rather than the sushi dinner option.  The price was the same for each at thirty dollars. We sat at a table with four other patrons with one side available for the chef to work his magic.

We began with Japanese clear soup.  I didn’t have a very high expectation for it.  I usually am not fond of broth.  However, this soup had wonderful flavor.  I was pleasantly surprised.  Next appeared a small lettuce salad with just lettuce, but the dressing had a bite to it that I enjoyed. The chef then delivered the flaming shrimp appetizer.  Yum!  We also were given our choice of three sushi rolls and I chose the Boston roll, which had tuna and avocado.  You can see we were not going to leave this place hungry,

For the entrée, I ordered a combo of filet mignon and shrimp, which came with hibachi vegetables and rice.  Everything was rich and full of deep flavor.  The chef made jokes as he threw items up in the air.  He was a delight to watch.  We also had some oolong tea.

My dining companion and I ordered everything the same and agreed that it is definitely a place we plan to return.  Green Bay Restaurant Week is a good idea for people to get out and try places they may not have before.  We both left with a doggie bag, too.

The Dockside – Oconto, WI

Up until a year ago I didn’t enjoy a Bloody Mary.  That has all changed and now I can’t seem to stop ordering them.  Here are a couple pictures of one from The Dockside in Oconto.  Two varieties are offered and on this day I ordered the “Loaded Bloody Mary.”20150611_165219126_iOS20150611_165246674_iOS  Indeed, it was loaded with flavor  and had enough food to be considered a true nosh!

Rustique

Formerly a church, Rustique now houses a wonderful eating establishment.  A friend had enjoyed  a number of meals there and mentioned that they were scrumptious.  The two of us soon motored to historic Suamico, a small village just north of Green Bay.

When we entered, Denise and I appreciated the original vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors of the chapel.  It was beautiful.  The place was hopping which is always a good sign of customer satisfaction.  We found seats and ordered Bloody Marys as we took a look at the menu.

An array of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and baskets were offered.  They serve the traditional cod and perch fry every day which is music to the ears of many Wisconsinites.. The brick oven pizza looked outstanding and was their specialty, but their signature sandwich was a Cuban called “El Duque.” It boasted slow-roasted pulled pork, thick-sliced ham, pickle, red onion, Swiss cheese, mustard, and mayo.  We lingered over our tasty drinks and finally made our decisions.  Denise and  I couldn’t resist the “El Duque.”  We were not disappointed.  We both upped the standard French fries with orders of Pesto fries.  If you like pesto, these potatoes  should be on your list.  I’ll order them again.  The sandwich was very hearty and filling, yet seemed to melt in my mouth.  True Nosh!20150522_165619278_iOS20150522_173717314_iOS

Another Nicky’s Lunch

I enjoyed my lunch so much the first time I went to Nicky’s Lionhead Tavern, I had to go back.  On my first visit to this old pub in De Pere, Wisconsin, 20150513_175503231_iOS20150513_175531058_iOSI ordered a Rueben, with  thick pastrami, tangy kraut, and Swiss cheese..  Delicious!  It was good enough to order again the second time, but I wanted to try something different.  I went with the Cuban sandwich, featuring slow roasted pork, smoked ham. and Swiss cheese.  The mustard and pickle gave it added zip  Each sandwich came with fries, a pickle, and a full feeling that lasted for hours.  Of course, this lunch started with a Bloody Mary, too.  A true nosh!

Nicky’s Lionhead Tavern and Grille

My friend, Denise, and I had a wonderful lunch at Nicky’s Lionhead Tavern and Grille in DePere, Wisconsin.  It started with these fantastic Bloody Marys and beer chasers.  Yum.  I then had a delicious Reuben and Denise ordered a Cuban sandwich.  Each came with fries. We weren’t Nicky's Bloody Marydisappointed.  Nicky, watch out.  We’ll be coming back for a repeat performance!  True Nosh.

Onion Tangles – The Ogden Club

My friend suggested eating lunch at the Ogden Club in Menominee, Michigan when we were shopping in the area recently.  I had driven past there many times, but never really considered stopping.  I think I thought it was a private club.  The atmosphere was pleasant.  A nice bar and many tables.  Their Tuesday special was half price onion tangles.  We were unsure if they would be good, but half price, how could we lose?  We decided to split an order.  Were we ever glad we didn’t each order one!  It was huge.  We didn’t even finish the one we shared.  They were light and delicious. I won’t wait for these tangles to be half price to order them again. IMG_0085 Onion TanglesWe also had burgers and were very satisfied.  We plan to return to The Ogden Club.  A true nosh!

The Feast

A small dining spot called The Feast had wonderful reviews, so we were a little surprised to find it located in a strip mall. There were a few outside tables, but we chose to eat inside as the open air view was of the parking lot.  Local artwork on the walls was available for purchase and many of them were of local establishments on the water.

The menu was quite extensive.  I decided on a Fried Green Tomato BLT on a croissant with onion rings and baked beans.  It was marvelous!  I love fried green tomatoes, but have never had them on a BLT before.  The bacon was crisp and it had a sauce with a little kick.  Having it all on a croissant was an added feature.  The onion rings were crunchy and delicious, but I have to mention the baked beans.  They were the tastiest I have ever eaten!  They were several types of beans, almost like Creole beans, but whatever they did to them gave them such tempting DSCN1155flavor.  I would return to The Feast for the beans, alone.  Barb ordered a burger, fries, and coleslaw which she said were wonderful, too.  True Nosh or Truly Nauseous?  A true nosh.

Mr. Bones

DSCN1091DSCN1093DSCN1092DSCN1094The owner of the house Barb and I rented on Anna Maria Island recommended the eating establishment Mr. Bones to us.  It is the spot that Phil said had the best barbeque in the United States.  High praise indeed.  We knew we had to try it.  Walking into the restaurant our eyes immediately alighted on a coffin, which was filled with bottled beer.  We made our choices and were guided into the small dining room.  There were many masks on the walls that continued to give us a voodoo vibe.  I enjoyed the atmosphere having never been in a place quite like it before.

The menu had a lot more offerings than barbeque.  After much deliberation, I made my selection.   In this dining place, that is so well known for barbeque, I chose Chicken in Thai Peanut Sauce.  It boasted sliced tender breast smothered in a rich, spicy peanut sauce garnished with green onion and crushed peanuts.  I also ordered curried rice with madras spices and vegetables which was served with mango chutney.  The chicken was moist, but the sauce tasted like it was made with peanut butter.  It was good, but I guess I was expecting more.  The curried rice was flavorful and I would definitely order it again.  Barb had the barbequed ribs and said it was excellent.  Next time I need to remember to order the restaurant’s specialty.  We each took a large portion of our meal home.  I did order Key Lime Pie for dessert, though.  It was both beautiful and delicious!  True Nosh or Truly Nauseous?  Overall, a true nosh.

The Beach House

While in Florida, Barb and I enjoyed a visit from another close friend, Kathy.  Back in the day, the three of us taught seventh graders in rooms next to each other.  It created a lasting bond.  One night we chose to eat at The Beach House. We snagged a table right on the beach and basked in the warmth as day turned to evening.

After some serious catching up (and a margarita) I decided to try two appetizers instead of an entrée.  The first was Tots and Pearls.  It consisted of Gourmet Tater Tots wrapped with house cured Norwegian Smoked Salmon, Sturgeon Caviar, and Crème Fraiche.  Ordinarily I never would order tater tots, but I thought it sounded interesting.  And it was.  Beautifully presented, the small orbs of deliciousness, were sitting up invitingly.  The firmness of the smoked salmon blended well with the slightly salty taste of the caviar.  Velvety crème fraiche offered a contrasting texture as I bit into the smooth potato center.  This tempting delight was certainly not my usual fare. The other  appetizer I ordered was sliced Ahi tuna with pickled ginger and wasabi.  This was wonderful as well.  However, I knew I liked tuna, so it wasn’t a surprise like the Tots and Pearls.  True Nosh or Truly Nauseous?  Definitely a true nosh.DSCN1070
